What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and/or improves the function of the nose. It is one of the most requested facial surgeries due to its ability to enhance both appearance and breathing.Dr. César López performs two main types of rhinoplasty:
Cosmetic rhinoplasty aims to bring the nose into better harmony with the face by refining features such as a dorsal hump, a wide or drooping tip, or flared nostrils—while always preserving the patient’s unique facial identity.
Functional rhinoplasty addresses internal issues that impair breathing, such as a deviated septum, nasal valve collapse, or enlarged turbinates. Aesthetic and functional goals are often combined in a single surgery.
The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours, is performed under local anesthesia with sedation, and typically does not require an overnight stay. Recovery is gradual, with final results becoming visible over several months.
- Requirements: CT scan of the nose and paranasal sinuses, and laboratory tests.
- Postoperative care: It is essential to avoid sun exposure while wearing the bandage, as well as bending over, lifting heavy objects, or engaging in intense physical activity such as weightlifting or cardiovascular exercise for at least 4 weeks.
You can be a good candidate if
- You are not satisfied with the size, shape, or symmetry of your nose.
- You experience breathing difficulties, snoring, or nasal obstruction.
- You have realistic expectations and understand the scope of the procedure.
- You do not smoke or are willing to stop during recovery.
- You seek subtle, refined changes rather than a drastic facial transformation.
This procedure is not recommended if
- You have unstable medical conditions.
- You have unrealistic expectations of a “perfect” result.
- Facial growth has not been completed (generally before age 18), unless there is a medical indication.
Benefits of rhinoplasty
Undergoing plastic surgery with Dr. César López means more than simply refining a feature: it's about restoring balance, regaining confidence, and achieving results that feel as good as they look. Each procedure is designed not only to improve specific areas of the face or body, but also to improve overall harmony, comfort and well-being.
Improved nasal airflow
Functional rhinoplasty widens or stabilizes the internal nostrils, correcting septal deviation, reducing obstruction and relieving respiratory effort.
Increased self-confidence and well-being
Correcting breathing difficulties reduces fatigue and improves sleep quality, while aesthetic improvements promote a positive self-image.
Stable and long-lasting results
With meticulous skeletal remodeling and cartilage grafting when indicated, results last a lifetime and age naturally with the rest of the face.
Correction of congenital or traumatic deformities
Whether you're born with a dorsal hump, bulbous tip, or post-injury asymmetry, rhinoplasty can restore both form and function.

How is rhinoplasty different when done for functional reasons?
Functional rhinoplasty addresses internal problems such as a deviation of the septum or the collapse of a valve. While the outside of the nose can be modified, the primary goal is to improve breathing, often combined with subtle cosmetic improvements.
When can I breathe normally again?
Most patients begin to breathe more comfortably through the nose after the first 7 to 10 days, once the splints are removed and the swelling goes away. The final improvement in airflow is achieved during the first 1 to 3 months.
Are rhinoplasty results permanent?
Yes. Rhinoplasty creates structural changes that last a lifetime. While the nose ages naturally, the improvements are stable and long-lasting when done correctly.
Will my nose look natural?
Yes, Dr. López's approach is based on moderation and proportion. He avoids radical changes and instead sculpts a nose that aligns with facial structure, expression and ethnicity.
Will rhinoplasty leave visible scars?
In most cases, scars are not visible. When a closed technique is used, all incisions are made inside the nose. If an open rhinoplasty is required, the small incision at the base of the nose typically heals discreetly and fades over time.
